director Lauren Berry

Lauren Berry

Lauren has loved the water ever since she was a little girl. Having grown up in Arizona, she spent much of her time in the pool with her friends (pretending to be mermaids). As a result, her parents put an emphasis on water safety and enrolled her in lessons at a young age. Lauren has been able to share her love of the water and passion for water safety through her career with Emler Swim School. Shorty after she graduated in 2015 from University of North Texas (go Eagles!) with a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology, she applied for Emler’s MIT program and started working at the Allen location. Thanks to the program and her fabulous mentors, Lauren was able to promote to Customer Service manager and worked at both the Austin-Westlake and Firewheel locations in that role. Lauren loves serving customers and building relationships and is excited to do so on an even larger scale in her role as Site Director at the Dallas – Preston Forest location.

Q+A with Lauren

What is the best part about working for Emler every day?

I love the children! At the end of the day, I love what I do because of our swimmers. They put a smile on my face and make work fun! It is so incredible to watch them grow and progress in their lessons. There is nothing more rewarding than teaching a child a life-saving skill!

What do you believe makes you a great site director?

I am passionate about inspiring and leading a team. I love helping individual employees find their “why”. When you know why you do what you do, it gives you a sense of purpose and drives you to be the best version of yourself that you can be!

Share a childhood memory about your experience with swim lessons.

When I was about 4 years old, I took lessons in my grandma’s pool with a lady from our church. She was so sweet and patient! I don’t recall ever being afraid of the water and loved to swim on the very bottom of the pool. I distinctly remember when she taught me how to float on my back–I had the hardest time being still!

What favorite memory do you have from working at Emler?

During my second semester of teaching at Emler, I had a Preschool Beginners student who was absolutely petrified by the idea of swimming without flotation. Although she loved being in the water, she had initially progressed a little more slowly than some of the other students because she was so nervous. One day, she gathered up her courage and decided she was ready to try swimming 5 feet without equipment and, of course, she did it! We had the biggest celebration for her! I was so proud of her that the moment brought tears to my eyes.

Share a childhood memory when you were brave and overcame fear.

I was very shy as a child and being in the spotlight was my worst nightmare! My little sister, who is seven years younger than I am, is the exact opposite and loves the stage. She had a solo in her kindergarten production and as I was watching her I thought to myself “I have a song in my heart too!” The next day, I overcame my fear and I tried out for the talent show at school and made it! After that, I continued to learn music and can play the violin, piano, and ukelele. I stayed involved in choir through high school and qualified for All Region as a Soprano all four years!
