When Should My Baby or Toddler Start Swim Lessons?

When Should My Baby or Toddler Start Swim Lessons?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons can begin as early as age 1. But you don’t have to wait that long. Emler’s Bathtime Babies program starts at 2 months old with a parent in the water alongside your child, introducing water familiarity, breath awareness, and early safety foundations before most drowning risks even begin. The earlier you start, the more time your child has to build the skills that could one day save their life.

Why Starting Early Matters

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 1–4 in the United States, according to the CDC. A study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found that formal swim lessons reduce that risk by up to 88% in children ages 1–4. Those numbers are not abstract, they reflect what happens when children have structured instruction versus none at all. What that research also shows is that earlier exposure to water, even in a structured, parent-supported environment before age 1, builds the water familiarity and comfort that makes formal safety instruction more effective when it begins. Children who have been in the water consistently since infancy tend to respond to safety skill instruction with less anxiety and more readiness than those who are introduced to the pool for the first time as toddlers.

The Emler Age Guide: What’s Right for Your Child

2–5 Months: Bathtime Babies

Emler’s Bathtime Babies program is a parent-and-child class designed for infants as young as 2 months old. You are in the water with your baby throughout every lesson. Classes run 30 minutes once a week, in Emler’s warm-water pools heated between 88–92°F, the ideal range for infant comfort.

In Bathtime Babies, your baby begins learning how to float, kick, and reach for things in the water. You learn how to safely support your infant in the water and how to use bathtime at home to extend water familiarity between lessons. The foundation being built here is not stroke technique, it is water confidence, breath awareness, and the early physical responses that underpin every safety skill to come.

6 Months–35 Months: Level 1 — Jump, Turn, Swim

At 6 months, children progress into Level 1, still with a parent in the water. This is where Emler’s foundational safety skill, Jump, Turn, Swim, is introduced for the first time. Children learn to turn themselves around in the water and swim back to the edge independently. They also begin developing breath control, underwater swimming for 8–10 seconds, kicking, and the introduction of Roll-to-Backfloat. These are not preliminary exercises, they are the survival responses that matter if a child unexpectedly enters the water.

3 Years: The Preschool Program (Levels 3–5)

At 3 years old, children transition to Emler’s Preschool program and begin lessons independently, parents cheer from the sidelines. Classes are tailored specifically to 3-year-old development, with play-based instruction that builds water independence, safety skills, and confidence in a way that feels encouraging rather than overwhelming. Each level has clear, measurable milestones so you always know exactly what your child is working toward and what comes next.

4 Years and Up: The Kids and Advanced Programs

Children 4 and older enter Emler’s Kids program, progressing through SwimSure™ Levels 6 through 11. By this stage, lessons focus on stroke development, endurance, and refinement. The safety foundation built in the earlier levels is already in place, these levels build on it.

How to Know Which Level to Start At

If your child has had some swim experience and you’re not sure where they fit in the SwimSure™ progression, Emler’s Swim Level Quiz takes about a minute and places your child in the right level based on what they can currently do. Every child who enrolls also receives an in-water assessment so instructors can confirm placement and make adjustments from the first lesson.

What If You’re Starting Late?

There is no wrong age to start. Children who begin swim lessons at 3, 5, or even older will progress through the SwimSure™ curriculum at their own pace, starting at the level that matches their current ability. The goal is not to start at the earliest possible age, it is to start. Every lesson builds safety skills that are relevant at any age, in any water environment.

If your child has a fear of water or a previous negative experience, Emler’s small class sizes (4:1 ratio for preschool age and above) and certified instructors are specifically trained to build water confidence gradually. A free trial lesson is available at every location so you and your child can experience the environment before committing.
