Frequently Asked Questions

What are you doing to keep everyone safe and healthy?

Safety has always been and will continue to be #1 at Emler. We’re doing what we’ve always done – followed or exceeded all local, state and federal guidelines – to protect not just your family but our employees as well.

We’re using CDC recommended cleaning products to wipe the facility every 30 minutes, and making hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes available. Instructors are wearing face shields in the pool, and we are requiring all adults out of the water to wear face coverings over their mouths and noses. Kids are not required to wear masks in the pool but those over the age of 2 are encouraged to wear them while they are not in a lesson.

We are allowing only one caretaker to accompany each little fishy, and chairs in the observation room and on the pool deck are spaced 6 feet apart. Employees are monitoring traffic in and out of the building to remind people about social distancing. Plus, we are taking staff temperatures within 5 minutes of the beginning of a shift. There is more information on our Health & Safety Protocols page.

Are pools safe to swim in during COVID?

Yes, it’s safe to be in pools! According to the CDC, there is no evidence that the coronavirus can spread through properly maintained pools. We’ve always valued health and safety, which is why we already had a top-of-the-line purification system with UV lights that kills and inactivates viruses and bacteria in addition to using proper chlorine levels. Every Emler pool meets or exceeds CDC health standards. Plus, our leading-edge air filtration systems replace stale air from the facility with fresh air 8 times per hour.

Do parents or children have to wear masks in the pool?

No one has to wear a mask in the water. Masks in the water are unsafe, which is why we would never require them. Plus, masks are ineffective when they’re wet. Our instructors instead wear face shields in the water.

All adults, including employees and caretakers, out of the water are required to wear a face covering over their noses and mouths. Kids are not required to wear a mask out of the water. However, children over the age of 2 are encouraged to wear a covering over their mouth and nose when entering and exiting the building or if they are not actively participating in a lesson.

What are your class ratios?

We’ve always had small class sizes of 3-4 kiddos, as well as private lessons, and nothing has changed. We now offer the option to form your own private group with family, friends or neighbors you know. Additionally, another option is the parent & child class, with appropriate spacing between families in the pool, where kids receive instruction from a teacher on the deck. We are monitoring and strictly adhering to all local, state and federal guidelines regarding levels of occupancy and the number of people that are allowed in gatherings so we can continue to be the healthiest, happiest pool in town.

Chelsea Cordova

I grew up in Sugar Land, Texas, joined my first swim team at the age of six and never looked back! I continued to swim competitively year-round for over twelve years. While attending college at Texas State University, I would return home in the summers to coach a swim team. After graduating from college, I got a job in my degree field as an Archaeologist. After a year, I missed the sport and was reaching out to swim teams to start coaching again. In 2016, I moved to Austin, Texas, and found Emler Swim School. Teaching kids not only to love the water but also how to be safe is a dream job I didn’t know existed until being introduced to Emler!

Q+A with Chelsea

What is the best part about working for Emler every day?
I always leave work in a better, more positive mood than when I arrived because of the kids, the families, and the staff!
What do you believe makes you a great site director?
I have a deep consideration for everyone in the building. I try to put myself in their shoes and see things as they do.
Share a childhood memory about your experience with swim lessons.
My parents constantly took me to the pool at a young age. I remember sitting on my mom’s lap while she sat on the edge of the pool and I used her legs as a slide over and over again. At the age of six, I joined my neighborhood swim team and continued swimming. In later years, I coached for that team every summer until I was twenty. The environment was like a family and I created life long friendships!
What favorite memory do you have from working at Emler?
Halloween is one of my favorite days at Emler! The staff and managers dress up and everyone is in a silly and joyful mood!
Share a childhood memory when you were brave and overcame fear.
When I was starting my swimming career, I was terrified to dive into the pool. My mom scheduled a private lesson with my coach so we could spend one-on-one time trying to accomplish diving. I remember vividly my coach’s patience and the love she showed me while trying to give me the confidence to even attempt a dive. I reflect on this memory often when teaching nervous kiddos!

Why do you love working with kids?

Being around kids each day makes coming to work fun. Kids are silly, entertaining, and a lot of fun to talk to. I’ve seen sweet, chubby-faced infants become adorable toddlers and then personable, talkative grade-schoolers. Watching them grow up and become confident swimmers is a highlight of my job.

What do you enjoy outside of working at Emler?

I love to write in my free time. I am an independent publisher and to date have published 7 books. I love to bring characters to life and tell their stories. I also love to spend time outdoors, hang out with my friends and family, and go to a good movie.
